Angels Gate Gewurztraminer
Gewurztraminer is one of the most full bodied of the aromatic white family. The key to a great Gewurztraminer is patience in the vineyard. If picked too early it loses some of its distinct aroma, but picked too late the crop can be overcome by breakdown. It takes a watchful eye and much berry sampling to pick this varietal at just the right time.
When picked on time, its aroma is so distinct that even a novice wine drinker could identify it in a blind tasting. Our Gewurztraminer is a great example of aromatics, with classic lychee fruit, rose petal and floral character. The palate has an oily texture, combined with a hint of spice and tropical fruit. The finish is considered off-dry, which entails a sense of sweetness followed by a drying sensation.
Gewurztraminer can be a difficult varietal to pair with food. We like to pair this wine with seafood dishes such as Thai red curry mussels or grilled lobster. It also pairs wonderfully with egg based dishes, like a Quiche Lorraine.
